«Arpa d’or dei fatidici vati» – The Verdian patriotic chorus in the 1840 (1997)

Roger Parker

In this original study the author paints a picture of Milan’s cultural environment of the early nineteenth century, in which the young Verdi integrated and was working at his first musical output. Following extensive research in archives and on periodicals of that time the author reconstructs the impact that “patriotics” choirs of the early operas of Verdi had on the Italian public of that period. The evaluation of how the choir Va, pensiero at the time of the première of Nabucco in 1842 was accepted, has particularly drawn the attention and has established a new, open reinterpretation of the interrelation between Verdi’s music and the “Risorgimento”.
