The correspondence with the poet Antonio Somma starts in 1853 and it goes on until the autumn 1858 with a last isolated contact in December 1863. In the 101 letters it is possible to assist closely to the birth of the “libretto” of Re Lear and after a troubled path, the realisation through the complex and tormented artistic and scenic story of the première of Un ballo in Maschera.

The volume is accompanied by explanatory appendixes with unpublished documents.
