Giuseppe Verdi. Dalla musica alla messinscena

Edited by Franco Piperno, Daniele Mastrangelo and Manuela Riva (8, 2015)
In memory of Pierluigi Petrobelli
In October 2013 Pierluigi Petrobelli would have celebrated eighty years exactly in the year and month of the second centenary of Giuseppe Verdi’s birth. To Verdi, Petrobelli had dedicated most of his energies as researcher, organiser, manager of the National Institute for Verdi Studies; in Verdi’s year 2013 on 25th and 26th October the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy of the University La Sapienza in Rome – where Petrobelli taught for over twenty years tutoring many students, nowadays active in Italy and abroad – in conjunction with the Doctorate in Music and Performance, wanted to remember the distinguished scholar and professor dedicating him a conference where Petrobelli’s fondest facet of Verdi’s research, among all the possible ones, emerged: the relation with real music practice and performance and specifically the passage from music – from musicology research with a historical approach that is philological or analytical – to a practical mise-en-scène, to the realisation of the ideal of drama Verdi developed throughout his long career as opera composer, from which the conference title and topic come.
