In “Verdi the student – Verdi the teacher” Roberta Montemorra Marvin retraces Verdi’s apprenticeship steps in Busseto and in Milan, revealing also some less known educational texts on which Verdi’s training during his apprenticeship with Lavigna presumably occurred; it also identifies his theatre education parameters and as a consequence the teaching standards he transmitted to his only student, Emanuele Muzio. These educational principles influenced also his interventions in drafting the ministerial programme for music conservatories, for which he was responsible, in 1871. The last chapter recounts Verdi’s correspondence to rebuild an ideal educational programme for a future opera composer.
